La diaconia

S. Maria in Portico Octaviae

This deaconry was erected ca. 590 (or ca. 600) by Pope St. Gregory I the Great (590-604) near carcere Decemvirale. The church was in ruins and without revenues when Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667) suppressed it on June 26, 1662 and transferred it on the same day to the new church of S. Maria in Portico Campitelli.

Deaconry suppressed in 1662

(1) Cristofori lists Cardinals Gualone (1105?) and Domenico (?) (1133?) as occupants of this deaconry but Annual Pontifical Catholique indicates that this is erroneous.
(2) Annual Pontifical Catholique indicates that he could be the same person that his predecessor.
(3) Cristofori erroneously indicates that he became Pope Clement III. He also erroneously lists Cardinal Gregorio as occupant of the deaconry in 1159?.
(4) Vitae et res gestae Pontificum Romanorum et S.R.E. Cardinalium lists a Gualterio as cardinal deacon of S. Maria in Portico created by Innocent III. Hierarchia Catholica indicates that since Gualterio never subscribed as cardinal, it is doubtful that he was ever promoted.
(5) Cirstofori lists a Gregorio as occupant of this deaconry, between Cardinals Guala and Orsini, in 1146 (should be 1246). Hierarcha Catholica indicates that he should be eliminated from the list of occupants because there are no papal bulls subscribed by him.
